art review
writing piece
An art review is a critical analysis to educate a reader on a particular work of art, combining descriptive observation with personal interpretation. For my WRT 205: Critical Research (Writing and the Arts) class, we were asked to choose a work of art and craft a review to help our readers obtain an understanding of the experience before actually encountering it themselves. With the FIFA World Cup approaching in the summer (June 2026), I thought that it would be fun to explore a work of art that captured the excitement and cultural impact of the event... and what better way to do that than reviewing a World Cup jersey?
I chose to review Colombia's 2026 FIFA World Cup home jersey because I myself am Colombian, and feel deeply connected to that part of my culture. Their jersey has a solid yellow base color with red and blue accents on the sleeves and collar. But, what intrigued me most about it was the subtle, darker yellow butterfly wing pattern woven into the fabric. While most of my classmates chose to analyze a more traditional art form, like a painting or theater production, I was drawn to something more personal that challenged me to think about art in new ways.
My art review includes a descriptive narrative of my encounter with the jersey, research about its design and cultural significance, interpretation that connects both observation and analysis, and finally a recommendation for readers about engaging with the artwork for themselves.
